We spend 90% of our time indoors and are exposed to all manner of chemical and bacterial pathogens that could be avoided simply by selecting smatter materials. www.globalgreen.org/gbrc/whygreen.htm
Most people think of big industry as being the worst offender in the cause for a better environment, but in reality it is the American homeowner which consumes the most energy today.
Schade and Bolender Architects assist their clients in making smart decisions about where and how to build in order to minimize these negative affects on the environment. By designing the exterior of a building with attention to local climate conditions owners save money on their utility bills. We select building materials from ecologically sustainable sources, carpet and fabrics with recycled content, mechanical systems that use less energy, plumbing fixtures that conserve water, even paint that does not emit volatile gasses. We help to make buildings that are more energy efficient and environmentally responsible.
Rachel Schade was a co-author of the publication Simple Things Designers Can Do to Save the Earth in 1990; a companion guide to the 1990 Symposium coordinated by the Young Architects Forum. She also taught for three years in the fourth year design studio at Drexel which is devoted to sustainability in the built environment.
Kiki Bolender participated in the LEED Residential Rating Pilot Program sponsored by PECO.
Both Rachel and Kiki attended the Greening the American House Conference in Coral Gables, Florida in December 2005 and continue to incorporate green principles in nearly every phase of a project.
