A modern Arts and Crafts style building was proposed for a site on the upper Schuylkill River in the Philadelphia suburbs, for crew teams and for community use through township recreation programs. The upper level is entered at grade from the road. A long roof gable parallels the road in the modest manner of a Cape Cod house. On the river side, the building opens up with an expansive gable facing the river with boat bay doors below. Materials are sensitive to the neighboring residential areas, but are chosen to stand up to use by young athletes and periodic flooding.
A stream bounds the north side of the property and empties into the river. An environmental study area was envisioned, where students could conduct experiments on water quality and stream flora and fauna. The architects were actively involved in developing the college's vision for the building and the site. In spite of the sympathetic scale and materials proposed, the neighbors were vehemently opposed to any non-residential use, and the project did not go forward.
